During the drive
Road signs are primarily in French. Learn common terms for exits, detours, closures, directions and parking. Do not use translation tools while driving.
Allow more time than the map estimate, especially around Montreal construction, ferry approaches, mountain weather and holiday traffic.
Parking
Historic districts and central neighbourhoods can have limited parking, restrictions and winter snow-removal rules. Use official municipal or accommodation information instead of assuming street parking is available.
Remote-route discipline
On longer routes, refuel early, carry water and seasonal supplies, and tell someone the route. Live service can be intermittent outside major population centres.
